‘Battle Of Brains’ – 2013

AICS (Association of ICSE and CBSE Schools of D.K and Udupi Districts) Inter School Chess Tournament – 2013 was inaugurated on July 5 at 8.45 am at Mount Carmel Central School, Maryhill, Mangalore.

The inaugural ceremony began with a prayer song led by the students of MCCS invoking God’s blessings on everyone gathered. The encouraging welcome words by Sr. Melissa A.C., Principal of MCCS put everyone at ease, specially the participants who would take part in the Chess tournament – “Battle of Brains”, as the cerebral battle over the checkered board develops mental acuity and whole-brain thinking.

This was followed by an introductory talk and guidelines by Mr. Prasanna Rao, Arbiter, Derick’s Chess School, Mangalore said that chess is a game that needs brain power. Students’ involvement in Chess results in increased concentration power.

Dr. Kurian P. Abraham, Deputy General Manager, corporation Bank, Head Office, Mangalore inaugurated the tournament by moving the chess coin. He said that chess is a game of intellectuals, as it is the Battle of Brains. Chess encourages both logical deduction and creativity, narrow analysis and the synthesis of multiple variables into an elegant solution. There are numerous studies which show the strong correlation between mental agility, chess and education. He called on students to develop interest in the game and wished that some day they become World Champions like Vishwanathan Anand, the proud son of India.

“All that matters on the chessboard is good moves” Sr. Ida Barboza A.C., the Joint Secretary of MCCS in her presidential address urged the student participants to make good, intelligent moves on the Chess Board and encouraged them to take part in the tournament with its truest spirit, as the title of the tournament rightly says ‘Battle of Brains”

At the end Ms. Jacqueline proposed the vote of thanks and Ms. Zanet D’Souza compeered the inaugural programme.

The tournament began with an unbelievable participation of more than 300 students from 39 ICSE and CBSE schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The matches began at 10.30 am and will comprise of 5 rounds and the winners will be decided on the final calculation of points.

Valedictory & Prize Distribution:

The closing ceremony began with a prayer song led by the staff of MCCS .

Shree Raghuram Shetty, Regional Manager, SBI, RMO, Mangalore was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory function which began at 5 pm in the school hall and gave away the Team Championship Prizes.

Shree Vasantha Prabhu, Manager of SBI, Yeyyadi honoured the Board Prize winners under 14 category.

Sr. Ida Barboza A.C., Joint Secretary of MCCS distributed the Board Prizes to Under 16 Category.

Principal Sr. Melissa A.C. welcomed the gathering, Sr. Juliana proposed the vote of thanks and Ms. Sylvia Benis compeered the programme.
